of all the Project including SPTC. |
Project Name: Sports People
that Care (SPTC)
Location: Ghana
Vision: Develop
program in Ghana that uses football and football
players as role models to win the fight against
AIDS.
Background: On
AIDS Day 2002 students at University of Education
Winneba, Ghana (UEW) played against each other
in a series of events. This included the interviewing
of several AIDS experts on the OVF Ghana
Youth Intellect (Ghana) Program
which is a comprehensive youth Radio interactive
program on HIV/AIDS. The led
to the development of SPTC as a national level
program designed to bring leading professional
footballers together to raise awareness and also
to raise funds to help treat and care for those
who are suffering from AIDS.
Rationale: Using
sports to win the fight against AIDS. means taking
full advantage of the popularity of football as
a way to promote health and teamwork among youth.
The program is designed so that sports can be
used to address social issues relating to AIDS.
This includes encouraging prevention through the
distribution of free condoms and educational phamplets,
while raising money for AIDS treatment and education
to fund SUFIA.
Project Proposal Design:
Program raises awareness about AIDS and through
several complementary events and ceremonies organized
in conjunction with the football match. A portion
of ticket receipts go towards treating and caring
for people infected with AIDS.
Future plans include the development
of SPTC into an ongoing sports training and benefit
program that would involve at risk youth. To complement
this, Support For Infected and Affected
(SUFIA) is specifically designed to identify
and provide drugs for the HIV infected and basic
human needs for the HIV affected. This includes
Food, Educational and Health needs, Clothes, Shelter
as well as social skills and job training.
Goals:
 |
Raise
awareness about the risks of AIDS and
of those behaviors associated with AIDS
such as unsafe sex practices. |
 |
Raise
money for AIDS treatment and education. |
 |
Promote
positive role model for youth |
 |
Address

high risk groups who are susceptible to sexually
transmitted diseases like AIDS and 2) benefit
those who have already been affected by the disease.
