Project Pillar:
Ecology
Estimated Budget:
Most of the funding has been
completed thanks to a 2000 dollar grant
from OVF and a matching grant from the
Federal Government of Ghana.
Project Status:
Some issues have come up with
regards to implementation of the project.
The government is still supportive and
has put our project high on their list
of local priority projects. To increase
our status we need to come up with approximately
600 dollars to cover the costs of installing
the equipment. We are now seeking ways
raise the money. This include fundraising
sites such as Global
Giving and Kiva.org

Needs:
Modern equipment for farming and funding
complete existing infrastructure development
and expand operations.
What you can do:
We are asking for your help so
that these farmers can get access to infrastructure
to enable them to produce the oil themselves
rather than simply sell the palm fruit
to the local processing facility.

Project Name: Srowie Mixed Farmers
Coop Project
Location:
Jukwa, Ghana
Background:
For several years now OVF Ghana has been
helping establish a rural Farm's Coop. The
focus of their effort has been in the community
of Jukwa; a small community of about 4000
farmers in a mainly palm growing region
of southern & central Ghana.
Overview:
We have been working to improve the livelihood
of the farmers by working with them to increase
the value of the products Funding is now
needed to finish the construction of the
Palm Oil Processing Facility. The palm oil
processing unit will enable the farmers
to get more money for their palm growing.
Instead of selling fresh fruit bunches to
the processing facilities they with the
completion of this facility will be able
to do their own processing of the fresh
fruit bunches converting the palm fruit
into oil. We plan to further develop this
program by adding a bio-diesel plant to
use a portion of the oil to power the equipment
at the facility as well as well the farm
and the farm to market transport vehicles.
We also expect to develop an stationary
electrical generation facility powered by
bio-diesel or straight vegetable oil (SVO).
Vision:
A thriving market in Africa to
produce healthy food sustainably.
Project aspires to be show piece for the
use of sustainable and cheaply available
technology for rural development.
Project Design: Farmers
who participate in the program will come
with their crops and then pay for it with
money or a part of the oil. Part of the
income generating social enterprise component
of the program is to design is to provide
services to local farmers that includes
the pressing of their fruit and then the
transport of the oil to the local collection
facility. Jukwa Palm Oil Processing Unit
has a ready supply and demand for palm fruits
to be pressed and there is the market for
these products is in demand.
Implementation: Project
has been implemented over several years
as OVF Ghana has cultivated relationships
with local farmers in Jukwa. In April of
2004 OVF President Joy Tang Traveled to
Jukwa to sign an MOU with the farmers to
work as partners with the coop.
Through a grant from OVF,
the cooperative was able to secure a commitment
from the federal government of Ghana towards
the purchase of "Palm Oil and Palm
Kennel Oil Processing Plant" The option
of a Multipurpose Modern Oil mill
was carefully chosen as there are none in
the local area and for this reason it has
the potential to generate substantial income
for the cooperative.
Funding Strategy:
There is a possibility local investors
can get involved in this program and also
an opportunity for online investment like
through an online microfinance institute
called Kiva.
We will be exploring these opportunities
as part of our fundraising strategy for
this project.
Goals:
 |
Identifying
economically viable organic farming
operations to provide
a livelihood for local farmers using
the land sustainably while providing
healthy food; |
 |
Reduce
migration from rural to urban areas; |
 |
Identify
global organic farming networks and
technologies to build the model for
self-sustaining community living; |
 |
Expand
to other communities in the oneVillage
Foundation network, identifying
where ecological devastation is
occurring and organizing communities
to bring and end to those practices
and restore the land - restorative
economics; |
 |
Teach
villagers and farmers how to market
traditionally-produced crops as
organic, and how to do the record
keeping necessary for organic certification. |
Target Groups:
African Farmers + Rural Communities.
