The oneVillage Initiative is a comprehensive
platform for sustainable economic development. The Multipurpose
Community and Unity Center is the core of the Ecosystem
and the beginning point in this revitalization. The
Initiatives are designed to meet the needs of the particular
region through a multi-sectoral approach
that bring together local and global networks in concerted
global effort by way of effectively harnessing the potential
of ICT. The OVI is a comprehensive, phased process,
Steps to Full Implementation of OVI:
Phase I |
Field agents do an environmental
scan of the existing conditions and
needs of the communities in the focus area. |
Phase II |
Implementation of knowledge into practice
through the development of a Multipurpose
Community and Unity Center. |
Phase III |
Development of initiatives into profitable
businesses through OneVillage.biz. |
Phase IV |
Replication of the successful initiatives
regionally, nationally and internationally through
digital development networks. |
Stage I: Method Of Analysis
The Center is built on six 'pillars', which are the
foundation of the oneVillage Initiative Ecosystem.
The six Pillars
in the 'Integrated
Knowledge Wheel' diagram include: education,
governance, economy, ecology, wellness & healthcare,
and culture & tradition. The pillars, and the
concentric rings around them, describe the ecology of
community revitalization. What really matters is that
in disseminating this program that we give people the
tools to believe in themselves.
In this vein, the Assets
Based Community Development (as
put forward by ABCD Institute) Approach enables the
field agents to start a dialog with the community to
lay the groundwork for building a network of trust so
that all the stakeholders in the community development
process are personally committed to support each other,
as well continuing development and evolution of the
physical location where they can meet and work together.
The Community
Knowledge Delivery System as a component
of a whole systems development process can rapidly improve
the methods of analysis, while also offering an effective
way to explore and analyze the best solutions for a
particular community. The result is that the rate of
development and innovation is rapidly increased.
Through the connection portal of the CKDS the Initiative
will have a field agent support network. This will include
people throughout the world who have a particular of
expertise that is relevant to the OVI development model
as well as the needs of the community itself. CKDS team
members as Field
Agents will be trained to help local people
organize their efforts at community development. This
will include designing the ICT platform to suit specialized
local needs in tracking real market prices for their
products, educating their children to use the Internet,
ask family members abroad for marketing support, and
gathering necessary data to certify crops as organic.
Phase II Implementation of Pilot Projects
Through our evaluation of best practices we
have concluded that a new compact, more self-reliant
and integrated model of development is a required precondition
to promote truly sustainable development. Multipurpose
Community (Unity) Centers (MCCs)
are the delivery and implementation vehicle for these
new and highly integrated methods of analysis, management
and goverance. We are now looking for initial funding
to develop one or two MCCs as pilot projects to test
out the OVF Initiative Methodology. We anticipate that
MCCs will allow for the further refinement of best practices
so that they are suitable to replication with consideration
to the needs and conditions of the people where that
center is located, thus addressing a key problem area
of existing approaches.
Phase III: Business Development
and Incubation
The final stage of the OVI process involves the development
of profitable social enterprise to sustain MCCs and
finance their further expansion. oneVillage.biz
(OVB)
will demonstrate the compelling nature of self-sustainable,
social entprise oriented development models that focus
on bootstrapping and local self-reliance. OVB is designed
to be a for profit entity that serves several synergistic
purposes. It will: function as a social enterprise incubator;
promote goods and services produced by MCCs via e-commerce;
seek out socially conscious investors to invest in these
projects; and offer sustainble development consulting
services to various institutions and groups interested
in remaking themselves into more socially and ecologically
conscious entities. OVB is designed to raise funds to
address infrastructure needs for communities in low-income
regions based on a highly networked self-sustainable
economic model that weans underserved communities away
from dependency economics. On the ground support and
expertise will be provided in conjunction with a networked
funding and investment program to utilize and maximize
the potential of local resources through effective use
of information and communication technologies (ICT).
Focus areas include ICT, health, education, social enterprise
training and incubation and sustainable development.
Phase IV: Development of oneVillage
Global Initiatives Network
The proposed New World NGO Coalition
offers a unique approach for using digital technologies
to create Augmented
Social Networks or Networked
Improvement Communities, increasing our collective
intelligence not incrementally but exponentially.
Initiatives carried out on both a macro as well as micro
level will focus on enable local reform by working with
policymakers at the local as well as national and international
levels to address challenging global issues that impede
the effectiveness of local capacity building and development
efforts towards a sustainable world in which the potential
of every human being is realized. This is particularly
relevant in terms of telecommunications reform which
is seen as vital to any serious effort to overcome the
digital divide since a major reason that Internet costs
are so high in developing countries is because there
is still governmental and or monopoly control of these
industries. However another component invovles the organization
of knowledge and facilitation of regulatory reforms
as well as the overcoming of funding hurdles so that
best practices are more rapidly implemented on the local.
