Project Name: Fantsuam
Sustainable Village
Location: BayanLoco, Kafanchan
and the surrounding villages in Nigeria
Vision: OVF sees this partnership
as a way to develop an integrated/whole systems
approach that can augment the existing FF program.
This project by proving the economic viability
of sustainable development will lead to further
replication in other regions. This work provides
the foundations for social unity and mobilization
to solve the critical issues facing Africa and
other developing areas, and to create a renaissance
for the two-thirds of humanity who are not at
the table of abundance.
Background: Fantsuam
Foundation was established as one of the first
rural-based ICT educational institutions in Nigeria
in 2000. That year, they were awarded the first
Hafkin Africa Prize for their innovative use
of ICT. Part of the prize money was set aside
to provide scholarships for 10 women to attend
basic computer literacy courses at the school.
This modest beginning has led to the establishment,
in 2003, of Nigeria's first rural-based Cisco
Networking Academy. The Foundation's achievements
have also been featured on CNN's Global Challenges
Program (December 19th, 2004).
FF has a social enterprise focus and has developed
a successful microfinance program, that helps
fund youth and gender-related equity and poverty
reduction programs. Given FF's achievement and
its focus, we decided that FF was the best choice
for our entry into Global Givings "Innovation
Marketplace" conteest. The Global Giving
project is a competition designed to promote social
entrepreneurism.
Project Design and Rationale:
This program will be designed to build on the
already existing microfinance program and infrastructure
at FF by seeking out solutions to further improve
the effectiveness of FF's program through an integrated
approach homing in on the core focus areas mentioned
below.
Key Focus Areas (Proposal sub-sections):
 |
Solo Computer - Market,
distribute and sell the Solo Computer
in Nigeria as a low-cost ICT for development
solution designed specifically for developing
economies (more about the Solo
Computer). |
 |
Nigerian Wireless Internet Service
Provider Initiative - Prototype low-cost
wireless solutions for developing economies. |
 |
Open Source - Develop low-cost, non-proprietary
solutions for developing economies. |
 |
Renewable Energy - Develop renewable
energy solutions that are cost effective
and reliable. This may include using Palm
Oil to power the gen-sets onsite or using
biogas from Integrated
Food and Waste Management Systems.
We believe that this can not only save
money for FF but keep money in local economy
by developing infrastructure and agricultural
for growing and processing Palm Oil for
use not only in the gen-set but also for
vehicles. |
 |
Vista/MINPHIS Prototype at FF - Develop
Vista Health Care Software that assists
health care workers to monitor the spread
of the disease in the community. |
Goals:
 |
Show the practical project
analysis, consulting, and business development
services that we provide to our NGO clients
in emerging markets.
|
 |
Outreach - We will use this effort
to mobilize Professor
Akiwowo’s network which includes
a large pool of allies to
OneVillage Foundation USA. |
 |
Raise awareness of OVF cultural program
and provide content
for Back to the Root Training Workshops
for Field Agents. |
 |
Serve as a memorial to Prof Akiwowo’s
contribution to
sociology and the African renaissance. |
Target Groups: Women,
