WODIV Programs in Development

GIS Development/ICT for Sustainable Development We are also working closely with the organizer of the Digital Earth Conference Tim Foresman to develop a section on ( Indigenous People and Communities ) . The presentation will include featuring the work of the WODiV and the development of a program to incorporate GIS tools into this process of local community development and the preservation of indigenous culture in Winneba area. Specifically this will involve discussion of the preliminary results of a program under development with The Carbon Project to develop a practical platform for implementing our field agent research centre model (part of a assets-based development approach) utilizing GIS and GPS tools to promote ICT for Sustainable Development (ICT4SD).
•  Local Portal Development Another key component in the development of our program at the WODiV is that we are now working with the International Free and Open Source Software Foundation . Their team has put significant time and effort into developing their website portal and have agreed to work with us to develop Drupal based technologies for the portal at the centre which will serve the surrounding region and specifically the area covered by the complementary wireless network. As a preliminary step we are now working with iFOSSF to Promote Google's Summer of Code Program to develop components for our proposed WODIV portal. The plan is to integrate this code into the WODiV portal, building on their already existing website template.
Wireless Network Building on the recently AirJaldi Summit (we participated in and helped organize) in Dharamsala India and with the help of the World Summits for the Free Information Infrastructures , we plan to set up a wireless network complementing the Digital Village components mentioned above. With the wireless network, all the pieces comes together and the center becomes Open not only in promoting open source/FOSS approaches and work processes but also Open in the sense that a while range of possibilities are opened in terms of working outside in businesses and in homes through the wireless network area that surrounds the ODiV. Once the network is fully set up through out the Winneba service area we plan to charge access fees into the network to help defray the costs of the ODiV as a way to sustain the financially over the long term.
Open & Distance Learning Modules We are now in the process of getting a grant from Commonwealth of Learning to develop Open and Distance Learning module for the development of ICT skills relevant to the promotion of sustainable development strategies in Ghana and the education of students about ICT & sustainable development in Ghana.
