Farmers Cooperative To Get Palm Processing Plant

Kafui & Godfred Prebbie in Ghana have been building a relationship with farmers in a small community called Jukwa in the Central Region over the last several years. Years back a small piece of land was purchased and a house built on it. The land and house will eventually serve as a base for building an agricultural operation in the community. This operation will focus as a coordination point for promoting sustainable agricultural practices to help local farmers. After several years of building a relationship with the farmers, a level of trust has been built between oneVillage Foundation, Ghana and the farmers. They now work together to build the Srowi Mixed Farmers Cooperative Society (SMFCS). SMFCS is properly registered and recognized in the Twifu Heman Lower Denkyira District of the Central Region, Ghana.

Recent achievements have been significant but they have not been without their struggles. We received word here in the US that OVF Ghana needed 10% collateral to complete a transaction with the Ghanaian government to enable the acquisition of a tractor for the cooperative. The timely intervention of OVF-USA through a generous cash donation from Helen Depietro--the grandmother of Jeff Buderer--made it possible to secure the required deposit. Money was needed in an account to prove that the recipient had the resources to manage the equipment and was established as working entity.

Finally, Kafui Prebbie of OVF Ghana reported that after lengthy discussions the District Directorate of Cooperative and Agriculture, approved the delivery of a "Palm Oil and Palm Kennel Oil Processing Plant" to the cooperative. This plant is worth an equal amount to the tractor that they missed out on, because they were out of stock. The option of a multipurpose modern oil mill was carefully chosen, as there are none in the local area and for this reason it has the potential to generate substantial income for the cooperative. Kafui and Godfred said the farmers were very grateful for the moral and financial support they received from the oneVillage Foundation.
