Mark Roest is committed to discovering, finding
key patterns in, and sharing the knowledge humanity
needs to live in harmony with each other and the natural
world.
His world-view is influenced by Teilhard de Chardin's
concept of the noosphere, the living totality of thought
and experience around the planet, and by the work
of R. Buckminster (Bucky) Fuller, who taught whole
systems thinking and the intelligent use of technology
to meet human needs abundantly and sustainably, eliminating
a root cause of conflict.
Mark brings a wealth of knowledge of sustainable
technologies and economics to the powerful framework
embodied in the oneVillage Initiative, including:
- Cost-competitive renewable
energy technologies.
- Construction technologies
that minimize direct and indirect harm to the environment,
and maximize health, comfort and utility.
- Agricultural and waste
treatment practices that rebuild the soil and provide
abundant, healthy food.
- Classic health systems
of Asia, and the integration of classic and modern
health care practices.
- Transportation design for
urban and rural areas that minimizes pollution and
energy use and maximizes convenience and efficiency,
and can actually be profitable.
- Urban design practices
that minimize the demand on transit systems, while
maximizing both quality of life and economic productivity.
- The use of Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) and other aspects of Whole Systems
Modeling to identify the best ways to deploy the
resources listed above, to meet society's needs
and to protect and restore the environment.
- Economic theory that describes
how mutual support, social justice and sound environmental
practices can meet human needs abundantly, in keeping
with the lessons of Whole Systems Modeling and the
oneVillage framework.
- A path for the evolution
of Information Technology that can enable most people
to create their own applications, to understand
the global structure of information and knowledge,
and to input their own experience and actions into
the modeling of economic flows, so that all levels
of social organization can operate efficiently and
fairly, while restoring the natural world.
- A plan for identifying
which products and services are made using materials
and processes that have been proven safe for the
environment, on a global scale, and making that
information conveniently available to everyone.
- Business practices based
on respect and mutual benefit which make people
blossom.
- Educational approaches
that account for people's innate learning styles,
that build community, and that both build a solid
foundation of knowledge and foster creativity.
- The role that art, music
and other forms of expression can play in restoring
health and harmony to the human experience.
Mark holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts, and is a graduate
student in Urban & Regional Planning.
