The Institute for African Art and Culture (IAAC) is involved in the promotion of community building projects in both Oakland and Nigeria with a focus on African and African-American communities.
IAAC's strategy for accomplishing its mission is through an "Educulture Program." This program is comprised of several components: Community Outreach activities designed to help communities achieve self-awareness, self-development, and self-sufficiency; an International Exchange Program that includes study tours between the U. S. and West Africa with a concentration on art and culture; and the development of a settlement in Nigeria that serves as an anchor for the these programs in Nigeria, promoting sustainable development and cultural revitalization there.
IAAC Focus Projects & Initiatives Abudi Farm Unity Centre - The international program is a comphrensive self-sufficient settlement whose integral components will be Abudi Farm and Gardens, Abudi Health Spa Resort and Abudi Cultural Ensomble. Each element is independent in its own right but are integrated to present the whole picture of human life and development. IAAC is developing a Bio-Dynamic garden in Nigeria. The goal of this effort is to demonstrate the oneness of humanity and the environment. This garden will be the center of operations for the International Exchange Study Tours in Nigeria. IAAC Art & Cultural Exchange - IAAC promotes African culture through the sale of art and clothing and cultural events. IAAC has organized and conducted five intercultural exchange projects between the U.S. and Africa; those who have participated in these programs include artists, musicians, teachers, students and professionals.
Outreach in the Bay Area Africa Diaspora Community through Performance Events Promoting Awareness of African Culture - IAAC has been involved in various community development programs in Oakland. IAAC has presented over seventy five exhibitions of contemporary and traditional artwork and performances. Workshops and classes have been conducted for the Unified School Districts of Oakland, San Francisco and Richmond, Highland Hospital Oakland, Kaiser Hospital - Oakland, Richmond Art Center, Wells Fargo Bank - Richmond, Contra Costa Junior College and for the East Bay Conservation Corporation. One of IAAC's community outreach efforts is entitled "Rags to Riches". RTR is a project of community enhancement and development. More about IAAC's Art and Performance Program.
