Project name: oneVillage Initiative Open and Distance Learning

Location: Schools and after-school learning centers in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania

Vision: An interdisciplinary approach to learning that teaches students to in the words of ecological design pioneer John Todd "think like an ecosystem."

Rationale: This is proposed as a way to integrate and promote a cooperative effort between the OVF hubs located in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania and USA. Educational content is distributed to the hubs via a open and distance learning program.

Design: OVF ODL is a cooperative effort of various NGOs including those who are officially chartered as OVF affiliates. This Progrmam will be implemented as oneVillage Initiative Holistic ICT for Eco-living and Learning Program a joint-venture partnership with oneVillage Foundation (OVF) partners operating in US, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria and other countries. This program will build on other efforts already in progress including our in-house CatchITYoung Prorgam In Ghana.

The goal is to develop a full immersion education program that complements and augments conventional learning programs. This will include hands on experiments that will cultivate critical as well as whole systems thinking that challengers preconceived notions of reality.

Management: This program will be designed to be self-managing joint venture with the OVF EcoPartners taking an active role in the management of this program. An Executive Committee will be made up of full members of the program which may include non-OVF affiliate members but will require a commiment to OVF financial self-sustainability which includes certain OVF objectives such as Unity Center Development and incubations services. An Advisory Board (GAB) consisting of external members, leaders in education, science, industry, and public policy, will advise the executive committe of this program on Program issues, particularly those related to ecological ,social and economic sustainability of the program.

Groups will be formed periodically to ensure end-user feedback into the implementation of the various aspects of the OVF-GEI Program.

Representatives from the participating schools will coordinate efforts to raise money for funding their operations and ensure movement towards financial self-sustainability through the development of social enterprises.

Instructors will be guided by their students needs and also coodinate that with the overall theme of the program will includes curriculum development and class plans that encourages a whole systems approach to learning.

Goals:

1.

Improve awareness of ICT. and the importance of whole systems design and thinking to create healthy and sustainable communities and societies among students and teachers

2.

Develop locally based content which can between shared between the hubs.

3.

Assist the communities towards their full participation in the global knowledge economy.
Target Groups: Secondary students
