The Jukwa Cooperative has been a product of many
years of effort on the part of the Prebbie family.
It is designed to serve as a base for building an
agricultural operation in the community that would
focus on sustainable agricultural practices to help
local farmers. After several years of building a relationship
with the farmers, a level of trust has been built
between oneVillage Ghana and the farmers. OVF Ghana
now work together to build the Srowi Mixed Farmers
Cooperative.
Recent achievements have been significant but they
have not been without their struggles. We received
word here in the US that OVF Ghana needed 2000 dollars
to complete a transaction with the Ghanaian government
to enable the the acquisition of a tractor for the
cooperative. Money was needed in an account to prove
that the recipient had the money to use the equipment
and was established as working entity. I then approached
my grandmother for assistance in obtaining the funds,
which we then wired to Ghana, but the wrong account
number was given, leading to as series of struggles
and waiting for word on whether the correction hand
been made or the money had been received.
Finally, Kafui Prebbie of oneVillage Ghana reported
that after lengthy discussions were had with the District
Directorate of Cooperative and Agriculture the cooperate
received a "Palm Oil and Palm Kennel Oil Processing
Plant" worth an equal amount to the tractor that
they missed out on because they were out of stock.
The option of a Multipurpose Modern Oil mill was carefully
chosen as there are none in the local area and for
this reason it has the potential to generate substantial
income for the cooperative. Kafui and Godfred said
the farmers were very grateful for the money and aid
they received from the oneVillage Foundation.
