Embedded within the logical of natural systems is the
understanding that there is considerable energy invested
in biomass, so these systems are designed
to constantly recycle it back into the living part of
the biosphere. There are five kingdoms in biology and
each produces waste, which is fuel for another. The
interconnectivity of each kingdom operating as a sub-system
within the larger biosphere is vital to sustaining life
on earth. Humans by way of modern arrogance have sought
to deny the elementary relationships of nature and sought
to pretend that these relationships did not apply to
humans. The assumption taken from the bible is that
we were above nature and so the rules of nature did
not apply to us. To this day, this is bedrock assumption
of conventional or classical economics. Our ability
to effectively dial into this natural wisdom (biomimicry)
to create viable sustainable human systems will more
than any other technological factor determines our fate.
Natural systems are constantly adjusting to feedback
loops. In ecology iinformation is transmitted
between systems through flows of mass, energy and nutrients:
- Recycling of biomass - life could
not exist if it did completely recycle its components
- Symbiotic Interactions - many species
actually work together out of mutual, life sustaining
interests
- Synergistic attributes - whole is
greater than the sum of its parts Interrelatedness
- systems interrelate and dynamically adjust to changes
Biomimicry has two main aspects:
- The micro-learning from nature
on a biological level to design products
- The macro-learning from nature
on an ecological level to design industrial ecologies
and built environments that mimic natural processes
and feedback loops
